Introduction of the Module

Certain disease conditions may require surgical intervention to create an opening into the abdominal wall for fecal elimination. This opening is called a stoma. When opening is made on colon it is known as colostomy. It is the role of nurse to maintain hygiene of the colostomy after the surgical procedure. If nurse fails in taking care than it will lead to other complications.

Objective

At the end of the module the learner would be able to:

• Understand the definition and purpose of performing colostomy
• Explain the various types of colostomy
• Develop skill in assessing the stoma & surrounding skin
• Develop skill in performing colostomy care
• Enlist the complications of colostomy
